Inner Harbour - Steamship Terminal

For over 25 years, Victoria Harbour Ferry has been performing a very entertaining 12 minute Water Ballet for tourists and locals around Victoria's Inner Harbour.

When the harbour ferries were originally brought to Victoria in 1990, the Skippers were amazed at their maneuverability so they decided to put the little boats to the test by putting together a Water Ballet.  With no passengers on board, the Captains were able to push the adorable and functional boats to their limits, making them twirl around the water in and out of beautifully choreographed sequences.

The Harbour Ferry Captains who volunteered to become “ballerinas” had no idea just how popular their performances would become.  However, what they quickly realized was that they needed practice...and lots of it!  Back in the day, people walking by the parking lot would sometimes see five men wearing Harbour Ferry uniforms walking around the parking lot practicing their ballet moves.  These brave men were subject to a little teasing from their fellow Captains.

The Water Ballet is performed using 5 ferry boats and is inspired by a combination of military marching and the RCMP Musical Ride and every year the “dance steps” become more complex.

The Water Ballet has become a favourite weekend event in Victoria.  With over 300 performances to date, the ballet has been the subject of tens of thousands of holiday photos and featured in news articles, magazine stories, and TV shows from as far away as Australia.  In 2010, the Ballet was performed at the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, celebrated by the members of CFB Esquimalt and the City of Victoria.

Meet the Ballet Captains at the Causeway Marina (Empress Dock) following their performances. They’ll be wearing special red shirts!
